Name:             Steve Dawson

Job Title:         Primary School Teacher

Area:               South Yorkshire

Good communication skills are a fundamental necessity in all professions, especially within teaching. A teacher will need a range of communication skills, including clarity, active listening and empathy, to name a few. They will need to use their listening skills to understand the difficulties that pupils are having, along with excellent writing skills to be able to prepare reports and plans for their lessons.

For Steve Dawson, it was the opportunity to utilise his communication skills that originally drew him to teaching. Steve is a very self-aware individual, with a natural flair to interact and observe individuals; teaching therefore seemed the ultimate profession to maximise his communication talent.

Steve qualified as a teacher in July 2018, gaining both a PGCE and QTS. Keen to embark on his teaching career, Steve wanted to absorb as much experience as possible at various primary schools throughout South Yorkshire, therefore, opting for supply teaching roles seemed an ideal route.

During Steve’s training year he heard quite a few teachers comment on how efficient Provide Education were, offering suitable assignments with reputable schools on a regular basis. Choosing to register with Provide Education seemed a logical path to launch his teaching career.

Coinciding with the new academic year, Steve began his teaching career as a primary school supply teacher in September 2018.  For the last 12 months it’s been a non-stop succession of placements, including 3 long-term assignments, several medium placements and regular day to day cover.  All of the assignments have provided an abundance of learning, experience and of course the ultimate sense of satisfaction which overrides the challenges and pressures of teaching today.

Steve acknowledges how important it is for a supply teacher to be placed within the right teaching environment.  Joining an agency that attentively listens to your preferences, continually seeks feedback, regularly communicates and understands the teaching profession, has played a pivotal role in his first year of supply teaching.  Steve commented:

“I would recommend Provide Education because they are reliable, their communication is good and they regularly found me work over the past year. I even completed a term of my NQT through a school Provide Education found which was a great help to me”.

For those considering a teaching career, Steve advises to try and get as much regular experience in schools as possible before starting a course. Operam Education Group is due to launch a teacher support volunteering campaign later this year; it could be an ideal opportunity for individuals to obtain first-hand teaching in a classroom.

We hope to track Steve on his teaching career and follow his example of utilising effective communication to share his teaching experiences.
