As we celebrate International Happiness at Work Week, we look at why it’s important and what Operam Education Group branches do to create a happy workforce.
The world recognises the importance of people being happy at work as it affects the level of happiness in other areas of your life; most of us spend a lot of time in work. It is believed internationally that happiness at work should be on the list of top priorities of all organisations; it should be the norm, not the exception. For individuals, when you are happy at work, you are healthier, vitalised, more cheerful, more social, and more successful.
For organisations, happier employees are more resilient, more involved in team working, more productive, more creative, more innovative, contribute more and are less likely to experience a burnout.
So, how can you control being happy at work? Does it depend on who you work for and what you do? Finding a job that gives you the right level of work/life balance is crucial as well as one that offers you opportunity. Most of all, working for a company that has invested in the well-being of their workforce demonstrates that they care and take it seriously.
Here at all our Operam Education Group branches, happiness at work is given high priority as we have several initiatives to assist us in making it a great and healthy place to work.
Health and well-being surveys with nullam
We started asking our team members the right questions about how they feel, their lifestyle and what types of things they would like to access to enhance their health and make them feel good some time ago. Our health and well-being survey is undertaken in conjunction with ‘nullam well-being’ on a regular basis and enables us to plan a range of relevant enrichment activities and services that can be accessed via the workplace.
Earlier in 2021, we started another initiative which explores mores specifically how our employees feel about their work. Friday Pulse is a long-term initiative that measures workforce happiness through baseline questions then weekly follow-ups. It asks employees to share their successes, frustrations, ideas and team thank-yous. This feedback enables team leaders to discuss the results and address issues as they arise, leading to an improved work culture and stronger team working.
Research tells us that one of the most important factors in employee happiness is career progression. We nurture your career, whatever stage you enter our team, through a range of activities which include training, shadowing opportunities, additional roles and responsibilities as well as development activities. Every employee has a training and development plan which will identify your individual needs and strengths, so you will always feel you have something to aim for and have a sense of achievement when you reach your goals. We have appointed several Well-being Ambassadors in our offices to take a lead in some of our health initiatives.
We pride ourselves in a supportive culture, where team members help each other out when it matters most. Knowing what your goals are, meeting clear expectations and feeling valued because someone has noticed your hard work leads to job satisfaction which are important underpinning attributes to a happy working life. We are also good at saying ‘thank you’ to our employees, most notably, the challenges brought on by the pandemic and welcomed them back to office working with a gift.
